Proper dental care for kids is important so that their teeth stay in good shape even when they are adults. Here are a few basic tips on dental care for children of all age groups. Babies need to have their teeth cleaned every so that they don't develop infections. They are prone to thrush, a fungal infection can often be seen around the mouth. This infection develops when babies suck pacifiers, feeding bottles, or during breastfeeding when the skin around the mouth gets torn. By the time they reach the age of three, children develop their first set of milk teeth. You can start off your child on a regular brushing routine even at that age. Use a toothbrush as per your child's age. Keep away from fluoride containing toothpastes. You can start making your child use fluoride toothpaste once he learns not to swallow toothpaste while brushing.
Teach your child to the correct method of brushing and flossing. Most children like brushing their teeth on their own so go ahead and allow them to do so. Make sure you first completely get rid of the plaque and then let them brush on their own. Brush your child's teeth twice a day till the age of six. Till this age, children need help with brushing their teeth because their motor controls are not fully developed. When you are sure that your child can brush his teeth by himself, use an egg timer a stop watch to check that your child is brushing for at least two minutes.
Once the child has finished brushing his teeth, check to see if they have been cleaned thoroughly. Don't forget to show your appreciation if he has done a good job of it. If you find bits of food sticking to his teeth, clean the area again and show the child where he has missed out while brushing.
